The Buddha's Initial Discourse

Following His enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Siddhartha Gautama, now known as the Buddha, began his journey to teach the path to enlightenment. His first sermon, delivered in the Deer Park at Benaras, is known as the Dharmacakra-pavarana Sutta.

In this sermon, the Buddha outlined the Four Noble Truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the origin of suffering, the truth of the termination of suffering, and the truth of the path to the end of suffering. He also elaborated on the Eightfold Path, a framework of ethical conduct, mental discipline, and wisdom that leads to liberation from suffering.

The Buddha's teachings resonated deeply with his first disciples, five ascetics who had abandoned their previous lives in search of truth. This event marked the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha, a community of practitioners dedicated to the study and practice of the Dharma.
